I am a bridge between Eastern and Western cultures by heritage, education, avocation, and spirituality.

  • By heritage, I am a second generation Korean American. My parents immigrated to the United States in 1969, and I was born in Bethesda, Maryland. Both of my parents, five of my aunts and uncles, five of my cousins, plus my sister are western medical doctors, in addition to one of my grandfathers.
  • By education, I graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill with two bachelors degrees, BS Biology and BA Chemistry. In addition to these I hold two Masters degrees, one Masters of Liberal Arts (MLA) from University of North Carolina, Asheville, as well as a Masters of Acupuncture (M.Ac.) from Tai-Sophia Institute in Laurel, Maryland.
  • By avocation, I have a great love of the outdoors and most outdoor activities, such as whitewater kayaking, skiing, hiking, backpacking and biking. Also I equally enjoy inner activities such as yoga, t’ai ji chuan, qi gong and meditation.
  • Finally by spirituality, I was raised Southern Baptist, and now have an extensive study and practice in Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism.

I draw from my experiences as an Asian American, my studies of western and eastern sciences and philosophies to help my patients heal and flourish into their lives more fully.

I grew up wandering the beautiful meadows and woods of southern New York , finding my love of plants and all things wild at an early age.  I began my formal study of herbs and healing at age nineteen by doing an apprenticeship with Susun Weed, who taught me how to identify and harvest common local plants for food and medicine.  My studies at The Evergreen State College allowed me to deepen my understanding of women’s health, anatomy, and botany.

I attended a midwifery training program and have worked as a doula attending births at home and in the hospital.  I am also a certified Fertility Awareness instructor.

After moving to Asheville in 1993 I co-founded Red Moon Herbs, an herbal medicine company, and began teaching classes on herbal medicine and women’s health.  After years of teaching and running an herbal company, I realized there was a strong calling in me to work with people more one on one.  I completed a masters in Oriental Medicine at Daoist Tradition College of Chinese Medical Arts, where I was blessed to study with Jeffrey Yuen, an 88th generation Daoist priest.

I love living a simple life close to the earth, and spend my time taking walks in the forest, gazing at the stars, reading, wildcrafting, and spending time with my son Emrys.  I have a strong and eclectic spiritual practice which combines earth based traditions, Daoism, and Anusara yoga.

The highest possible goal for me in practicing Chinese medicine is to help people reconnect with their most authentic selves and to live the fullest possible expression of their lives.

I have heard my soul’s call throughout my life.  Some of my early memories are of planning my travels around the planet and of wondering what part of me was aware of being aware.  I began my healing journey as an adult in 1994 on a pilgrimage through the Mayan culture of Guatemala and Southern Mexico.  This journey provided spiritual reawakening and physical challenges that led me to attend Massage Therapy School in Florida in 1995.

After having my first son, I moved to Santa Fe, NM where I received my M.S. in Oriental Medicine from the International Institute of Chinese Medicine.  I also began my studies of Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and Taoism in Santa Fe.  After running my own acupuncture clinic in my home area of Western New York State, I felt a call to be a part of the special community that is Asheville.  Coming to Asheville, my soul feels like it has come home.

I see Chinese medicine as a way to bring harmony back to the body, mind, and spirit.   One of the beautiful things is that it can be approached from a scientific angle at one moment and a spiritual perspective at the next and always be addressing the whole self.   I believe Chinese Medicine helps us get in touch with parts of our self that are often neglected in modern culture, and that cause pain and disease if they are left unaddressed.  As we heal, we gain insight into the deeper messages of our symptoms and learn to express ourselves more fully.

I enjoy playing music, being in nature, and spending time with my wife, Joanne, and our three sons, Cyrus, 12, Leaf, 9, and Finn, 5.  I teach Qigong classes and enjoy sharing what I learn, and learning from others, in this process of spiritual embodiment.
