Holistic Functional Medicine in Asheville, NC

Functional medicine is based on a deep understanding of biochemistry and cellular physiology.

However, unlike traditional western medicine—which is frequently symptom focused—functional medicine takes a broader, system-based perspective. This holistic perspective identifies broad biochemical patterns that western medicine either misses or doesn’t look for. These biochemical patterns can indicate the beginning of serious illness or identify the underlying cause of long-term chronic illness.

One of functional medicine’s most important tools is a lab test that assesses the health of organ systems. The main test we use is a blood chemistry test, similar to one that a doctor would do during a routine visit, except more comprehensive.  This test helps us evaluate many areas of health, and can find hidden factors that may be keeping our patients from feeling well or healing.

This lab test can reveal problems like: blood sugar issues (insulin resistance, diabetes, and hypoglycemia), adrenal stress, the presence of acute or chronic low-grade viral or bacterial infections, thyroid health, chronic dehydration, anemia, parasites and other chronic digestive problems, cardiovascular issues, nutritional deficiencies, and much more.  The test gives us get a broad sense of which body systems are under the most stress, and whether additional testing is warranted. The test points the way to specific, effective treatments that treat fundamental pathenogenic, biochemical, or nutritional imbalances in the body.

Further, as licensed Chinese medical practitioners, we have found that the test results and our Chinese medical diagnosis stand up in a new light when viewed together. This has allowed us to create unique and comprehensive treatment plans.

Our patients have been delighted with the results they have gotten with this system—especially our patients with difficult, chronic problems. The combination of the functional medicine model alongside Chinese medicine appears to be a good one!

The functional blood chemistry tests are not cheap. We are fortunate to have joined a cooperative that negotiates good prices for these lab tests.
