Signs and Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is defined as an under active thyroid (hypo meaning under, beneath or down). Hypothyroidism is a western medical disorder which is diagnosed by a simple blood test for TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). TSH values which are elevated above normal are diagnosed as hypothyroid. This point often leads to confusion for patients, as their TSH values are elevated but they receive the diagnosis as hypo-thyroid.

Typical signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism are, but not limited to:

  • Feeling tired, weak, or depressed.
  • Dry skin and brittle nails.
  • Not being able to stand the cold.
  • Constipation.
  • Memory problems or having trouble thinking clearly.
  • Heavy or irregular menstrual periods.

Initially symptoms are mild and are often easily mistaken as signs of ageing. Over time they get progressively worse and worse, until they feel unmanageable.

Other additional progressive signs of hypothyroidism are:

  • Anxiety and depression.
  • Severe cold intolerance.
  • Extreme fatigue.
  • Mental foggy, inability to think clearly.
  • Palpitations.
  • Infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth
  • Irritability, tension, mood swings or
  • Unexplained weight gain with difficulty losing weight despite diet control and exercise.
  • Sweet cravings.
  • Unexplained hair loss.
  • Insomnia despite fatigue.
  • Overall weakened immune system leading to frequent colds and flu with difficulty recovering from illness.

Treatment of Hypothyroid

Over the past several years, I have been very interested in working with thyroid cases for a variety of reasons. Initially I used treatment protocols solely from Functional Medicine, and achieved modest clinical results. As I searched further in my work, I found a great deal of information, both theoretical and clinical from recent Traditional Chinese Medical sources.

After exploring and expanding several of these Chinese medical protocols, my efficacy in treating thyroid, particularly hypothyroid and Hashimoto’s disease, improved dramatically.

Now I use a combination of Functional medicine and Chinese medicine, both acupuncture and herbs to help thyroid patients, resulting in real world clinical outcomes that are extremely satisfying for both patients and practitioner. To the degree that treating the typical hypothyroid patient has become “my ideal patient”, one of my favorite types of cases to work with.

Please don’t get me wrong. Patients with hypothyroidism are suffering a tremendous amount. Living with the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be devastating and even more so because there are so few effective methods of treating it. I certainly do not enjoy seeing other people suffer.

However these patients have become “my ideal patients”, because they typically respond to treatment so quickly and dramatically. They begin feeling noticeably better within weeks. Of course every case is unique and different, and needs to be addressed as such. But taken as a whole, thyroid disorders respond quickly and easily when treated with an integrated approach of western, functional medicine and Chinese medicine.

Also it is important to keep in mind that thyroid disorders are chronic, long-term diseases, which need to manage over the long term, but you don’t have to suffer on a daily basis. Working together, we can relieve and heal many of the symptoms of the disease and give you your life back.

My invitation to you

If you have suffered from thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism and are frustrated because you cannot find the help you need, please call for free a 20 minute consult. There are effective, natural solutions available to help you regain your vitality and your life again.

“Since I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2006 after the birth of my son, I have not felt normal.  I have been on various medications since diagnosis with sometimes little to no improvement.  I have received services from various other providers, including other acupuncturists, to treat symptoms over the years as it seems that people have been able to only treat one symptom or another at once.  Hannah, however, appears to understand the thyroid issue and has addressed many symptoms at once which has greatly improved my physical, mental, and emotional state.  I have significantly more energy, both physically and emotionally, than I have had in quite some time.  I was literally trying just to make it through the day before I came to Hannah, and now I find myself planning to do things after work because I have the energy and ability to do things!  My body temperature has been so cold for so many years, and this fall, thanks to Hannah’s understanding of my condition, I was able to enjoy air conditioning in my car for the first time in years.  It may seem like little things…. but with hypothyroidism, all the little things add up to a gigantic thing.  I am so grateful to finally be working with someone who gets the little pieces and wants to help me put them all back together so that I feel more whole and able.  Thank you, Hannah!”   – T.M., Asheville NC
